Nostalgic summer
Remember those holidays of yesteryear? Not to an exotic destination, like Thailand or Curacao, but just relaxing in your own country?
Nothing compares to the magic of going on holiday as a child. Many Dutch people have their regular holiday destination in their own country: a campsite, a cottage, or a favourite beach where it overflows with Dutch and German tourists in summer.
Who does not remember it: leaving on a summer day, thirty degrees and plenty of sunshine, in a car crammed to the brim with beach towels, games and piles of library books. Some entertainment in the form of a gameboy and puzzle books so there would be no arguing in the back seat.
And then, after hours in the car, and of course arguing in the backseat in the end anyway, on arrival quickly put on your swimming clothes and off to the beach. That unpacking came later. There is nothing as magical as that moment when you climb the dune and see that first strip of sea, completely out of breath. Screaming seagulls above your head, salty sea air on your tongue and jumping into the ice-cold North Sea with unbridled enthusiasm. That is holiday.
Exactly this nostalgic feeling can be found on Terschelling, where Nancy Stokman relives her own childhood summers in Huisje Sinne.
